Trip Note: Friday: Once again we headed towards northern side of Qatar expecting to come across more new comers. We moved in two cars accompanied by Thajudeen, Sabu, Suhaz, and Faisal. Our plan was to take advantage of the early morning high tide forecast to find shore birds. We didn’t have much luck with shore birds. Instead, we managed to find some distinguished visitors along the shoreline. It was a Hoopoe we came across first. It looked bit disturbed when we approached, and eventually became comfortable with us and managed to get the shot I wanted with its crest up. It’s something special of this bird that I wanted to share with you. Then, we came across one of my favourite & colourful one; European Roller. Roller looked tired, may be after the long flight and was reluctant move from its perched position. Because of this, we could get so close to it and try different angles. So, thank God for the given golden opportunity and to Paul Guillet for getting this location. I’m sure this bird is going to find a place in your heart too. I would like to add one fact to this. Thousands of Rollers are shot dead in Oman for food (according to Bird Life Int’l). Really sad info ya.
On the way back we spotted some Cream Coloured Coursers in two groups. We tried to get close to them at least for a record shot, but they were too shy and always flew to further distance.

However, the double bonanza was more than enough to make this week’s trip such a memorable one. Saturday: Since my family left for India this weekend, I decided to take advantage of Saturday too. I had to move alone as none of my regular partners were available. I paid an early morning visit to the western side of Shamal and had high tide (6:35am) at my favour. There I got hold of a Lesser Crested Tern. Obviously this one also was too tired and tried to move a few meters away from me when approached. Showing patience paid dividend and it accepted my presence eventually. It looked like sleeping on most of the time I spent with it. Terns; they are well known for long flights. Some of them can fly non-stop 5,000 to 10,000 kms. Sighting record: In addition to the regular birds, there were six or more Hoopoes, and four Wheatears were spotted along the shoreline. They were mainly feeding from the debris left by the high tide.

Trip Note:
This weekend birding trip to the Northern side of Qatar was a marathon one (9 hrs drive) with rather larger group consist of John Thomson, Paul Guillet, Marco&family, David and Sabu.
Almost four weeks of waiting for better weather was paid off by the rarest sighting of Cream Coloured Courser (CCC), the most sought-after bird here in Qatar since it was chosen for Qatar Birds Club logo & once considered as “National Bird of Qatar”.
This bird was found accidentally after almost most eight months of search. And, at last when we spotted, there were more than one hundred of them on the shore line of Shamaal. They were found on a group of twenty. So what a day it happened to be at the end!
Other than CCC, not many interesting pictures as weather was not ideal early on the day and when it turned out ideal, no birds were seen.

Imagery from God's Own Country
Kerala is named as “God’s Own Country”. The images I captured during my recent visit to Kerala shows, how apt this name is.
Many Keralaites may not have had an opportunity to see the rich bird life in our wild and therefore I dedicate these images to them and to all Nature Lovers around the globe.
Our entire trip was dedicated to our friend Jose and his wife who visited Kerala from Spain (02-12-09 till 16-12-09).
Wayanad and Mysore trips were organized by my colleagues Alexander Mathew and Stanley Thomas. No words are enough to thank them for the wonderful trip which they were also part of.

In terms of photography, Thattekkad was bit disappointing during the first two days. Early morning trip to Kallippara on final day gave us most memorable moments.
Trekking to there was bit risky since aggressive elephant herds were stationed nearby. But at the end it proved to be really worth.
Other most interesting areas we visited were Peechi and Athirappilly/Sholayar.
We need to thank the Peechi Wildlife Warden (DFO) Mr. Shaju Varghese for all the facilities offered at Peechi.
Thrissur Koll (next to my house) was favourite birding location for my Spanish friend Jose. It seems he didn’t want leave this unique place.
I also used to spend my mornings there whenever feasible.

Our trip to Kuruwa Island at Waynad was really disappointing. This small island forest looked too crowded. And many visitors looked like to be there for partying rather than for a nature trip.
As a result of all these, bird life of this beautiful Island has reduced from 142 to 62 in a few years time.
It will not surprising if the wildlife of this beautiful island is expelled from their long habitat in the name of so called echo tourism.
